Apple iMac Review

When the iMac was just on the table, I was impressed by its technology, the all-metal + glass structure, the back raised design in the middle, and the 5mm thickness of the edge. I didn’t feel it was three years ago.

Perhaps the only thing that doesn’t fit in with the times is the iMac’s large screen border. Looking at the 27-inch huge screen, the 21.5-inch iMac doesn’t look so atmospheric.

After all, in the past three years, the screen borders of the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook product lines have been narrowing. The wide border increases the size of the entire machine while also compressing the available space on the desktop.

So if you’re going to start a 27-inch iMac, the first thing is to prepare a desk that is as wide as your height. It’s no nonsense, then look at the specific review.

Appearance configuration:

As a horrendous obsessive-compulsive disorder to the cleanliness of the desktop, the iMac gives me a sense of pleasure, not only its decorative and strong visual impact, but also the MacBook Pro. The display produces a bunch of converters and cables.

Apple iMac hides the rich connection ports behind the camera. Fortunately, Apple did not do too much, 4 USB ports and SD card slots were retained, while the previous two Thunderbolt 2 ports were USB-C. Replaced by the interface, like the new MacBook Pro, it is compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 standard and is 40Gbps.

These two USB-C interfaces offer twice the display bandwidth of the Thunderbolt 2, so they can support two 4K displays and one 5K display.

When the iMac was sent to the office, the courier brother thought it was Apple’s monitor. Of course, for me, the iMac is a top-of-the-line 5K display, and I sent a computer by the way.

In 2014, Apple introduced the Retina 5K display, but to this day, users who can use the 4K display are still not the majority.

Compared with the previous generation, the brightness of the new iMac has increased by 43%, up to 500 nits. In fact, most of the time I think 70-80% of the brightness is enough, except that the sun shines on the “China Zun” glass wall and reflects When going to the computer screen.

Apple iMac 01

The default resolution of this display is 5120 x 2880 and the pixel density is 218 ppi, although the 227 ppi of my 13-inch MacBook Pro is higher than this screen.

Although the 5K screen brings the ultimate detail and excellent look and feel, it also objectively raises the human eye’s requirements for photos and videos. In other words, the iMac will infinitely magnify some of the shortcomings.

And if you use an iMac to watch 1080p videos that are considered “clear” by video sites, it feels like watching 480p videos on your iPhone.

iMac is a tool for creative workers, the screen is a crucial point, high resolution means more details, even at the default magnification (200%), the effective pixels of this screen is equivalent to a 2560 x 1440 display.

CPU upgrade:

Like other Mac product lines, the iMac’s CPU has been upgraded to Intel’s latest 7th generation Core processor, the core codename “Kaby Lake“.

My iMac is the lowest in the series, featuring the 3.4GHz i5 and AMD Radeon Pro 570, 8GB DDR4 memory and 1TB Fusion Drive storage.

Compared to the previous generation of low-powered Sky Lake 3.2GHz processor, this CPU main screen is only 0.2GHz higher. The multi-core running score on Geekbench is 13,782 points, and the single-core score is 4,820 points. The two results are better than the previous generation. The model is about 13% faster.

Although the core generation, process and motherboard interface, the 7th generation “Kaby Lake” and the 6th generation “Skylake” remain exactly the same, but because the former uses higher fins and wider gate spacing, this generation of CPU frequency is improved The upper limit is higher than the previous generation.

In the previous review of the MacBook Pro, we mentioned Intel’s Turbo Boost Turbo Boost technology. When Turbo Acceleration is turned on, the CPU automatically adjusts the CPU clock frequency according to the current task volume. When using such a large amount of cost, such as Final Cut Pro The CPU can maximize performance when it comes to software for processor resources.

Graphics card upgrade:

The 21.5-inch 4K version of the graphics card was upgraded to Radeon Pro 555 (lower) and Radeon Pro 560 (higher), while our 27-inch 5K version was upgraded to the higher-end Radeon Pro 570 (lower) and Radeon Pro 580 ( High match).

The performance of the graphics card used by the iMac is quite impressive. The Radeon Pro 570, which is an entry-level 5K iMac, has a floating point performance of 4.4T, which is at the same level as NVIDIA’s current mainstream mid-range graphics card GTX1060.

We tested with two cross-platform tools, Unigine Valley and CineBench, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which barely pulled the core graphics card, was used as a reference for the crush because it didn’t have a previous generation iMac.

In addition to faster graphics processing, the iMac also supports multi-screen expansion for the iMac. The iMac can be extended to a 5120×2880 pixels, 60Hz display, or two 4096×2304 resolution, 60Hz displays.

Fusion Drive puts less frequently used software on slower storage drives, and puts frequently used software on SSDs, which increases speed and increases storage space.

Why choose iMac?

Ultra-high resolution, P3 wide color gamut plus one billion colors means that the iMac can accurately display details to restore color, and the large screen can simultaneously parallel multiple windows without the need to slide to slide the desktop.

The discrete graphics card means that the iMac can handle 3D graphics processing and video editing. The minimalist design and hidden interface, regardless of the size of the shape, are very suitable for obsessive-compulsive disorder on the desktop cable.

The iMac is a great tool for photographers, visual designers and video practitioners, although it is found at the front desk of the hotel.

Of course, for those who travel frequently, there is no difficulty in choosing between the two. But if you spend most of your time in the office and have few office outfits, the 27-inch Starter iMac is probably more cost-effective than a MacBook Pro+ display.

As for designers or video practitioners, you can still choose the entry-level processor version, but we strongly recommend upgrading the Fusion Drive to SSD. After all, speed is the first productivity for jobs that require large amounts of image and video material to be read.

As the device that has used the most work-happiness in these two years, the iMac concludes in one sentence: Once go iMac, Never come back.
